How does cherry juice work?

Cherry extract, and especially the extract of some specific cherries, is rich in polyphenols. One of these substances is anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is a substance that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Various studies have shown that taking anthocyanins reduces muscle damage and muscle pain after exercise. In addition, cherries are naturally rich in carbohydrates, which, combined with the 500ml of fluid that Amacx cherry juice contains, ensures that you not only get carbohydrates but also replenish your dehydration after exercise.

To benefit from all the benefits of the sour cherry, it is recommended to drink a portion of Amacx Cherry Juice 1 to 2 times a day. For optimal effect, charge this for 4 to 7 days in the run-up to an important competition (period). If you have used cherry juice extracts or cherry recovery drinks before, you will have noticed that there is often talk about "contains +- 300ml sour cherry juice" or "corresponds to 100 Montmorency cherries". That's actually very strange because you don't drink the drink because of the amount of cherries, but rather for the active substance anthocyanin. While the size of cherries differs per harvest, the size of the cherries also differs. That is why you always have a different amount of anthocyanin with this method if you use a product that consists of a number of cherries or cherry juice.

At Amacx, instead of looking at the amount of cherries in the end product we have developed, we started looking at the workable substance. With that in mind, the Amacx Cherry Juice is standardized on anthocyanin and not on the amount of cherries, so you know that you always get the same amount of this anti-inflammatory substance.

In addition to this unique way of product development, we have also thought about the convenience of the user by mixing the product with water and carbohydrates, in this way you also get 30 grams of carbohydrates and 500ml of fluid. Both are an optimal addition for recovery after heavy exertion.

If optimal performance and recovery are central, for example during a multi-day competition or period with several competitions in a short time, the use of cherry juice is recommended. But be careful: during training periods where 'getting better' is the main focus, it is better not to take cherry juice. The inflammatory reactions and muscle damage that occur after training are an important stimulus for the body to adapt and improve.

During heavy exercise, muscle damage occurs, which is often accompanied by muscle pain and reduced muscle function in the following days. Numerous small inflammations and associated 'oxidative stress' are the cause of this and are part of the recovery process. After the discovery of the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effect of 'tart cherries', the idea quickly arose that these cherries could play a role in recovery from strenuous exercise and improving performance in a competition shortly afterwards. The Cherry Juice is a handy ready-to-use recovery product.

Several studies have since shown that a concentrate of specific tart cherries, with high concentrations of polyphenols/anthocyanins, helps reduce muscle damage/soreness after strenuous exercise and increases performance the following day. This has been demonstrated in sports with short, explosive efforts (such as various team sports), but also in endurance sports such as cycling or running a marathon. In addition, cherry juice contains a significant amount of carbohydrates, which helps replenish glycogen stores after strenuous exercise. In addition to high concentrations of polyphenols/anthocyanins and carbohydrates, sour cherries also contain relatively high concentrations of melatonin. This substance has a positive effect on sleep quality, which can further promote recovery.
