Zinc is an essential trace element. Your body needs only small amounts, but it's involved in many important functions. Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood and to the process of cell division.

It also contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and to normal carbohydrate, fatty acid and protein metabolism. Your body doesn't make zinc itself, so you need to get it from food or supplements.

Most people get enough zinc from food like meat, cheese, grains, nuts and shellfish, so a supplement isn't needed for everyday health. Some athletes take extra zinc in demanding periods, for example around their key events or when they travel a lot and eat in unfamiliar places. Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
